If you wish to eliminate whatever facial skin problems you have, what type of treatment would you think is the most helpful? Perhaps one of the following:
- laser treatments
- dermabrasion or
- skin care creams
Read on for a review of each of the treatments.
Laser skin treatment is a cosmetic surgery technique to treat skin problems, in which a surgeon uses a laser to remove the upper layers of skin so that new skin reforms. It is often used on wrinkles and fine lines. It can be used to make burn scars less noticeable, remove acne scars, and spider veins and even to remove tattoos.
The idea of laser therapy is that as the top layers of the skin are removed, it allows the underlying dermis to be exposed, generating a new top layer of skin that is supposed to be softer, smoother, and hold fewer wrinkles.
Laser skin resurfacing is carried out under local anaesthetic and sedation. Recovery time after laser treatments depends on the depth of penetration of the laser, but after extensive treatment, it can take a long time.
Laser skin treatment has similar effects to dermabrasion and chemical peels – it is sometimes referred to as a laser peel. The technology used is different but the changes that occur in the skin are much the same.
Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by acne, accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out wrinkles on the face, such as those around the eyes and mouth.
It is a surgical procedure used to “refinish” skin so that any irregularities on the surface of the skin are smoothed out. Dermabrasion involves removing the surface layers of skin using abrasive sandpaper and rotating wire brushes. On the day of the procedure, the skin to be removed is frozen using a Freon spray.
The operation is done using local anesthetic with sedatives, or even general anesthesia. Once frozen, the outer layer of the skin is sanded off, revealing the fresh new layer of skin. After the procedure, skin may feel sensitive and tingly with some burning and swelling. The recovery takes about 10 days.
While helpful, laser treatments and dermabrasion treatments are expensive and often require an extended period of healing. Even if you choose a doctor with a good reputation, there’s always the possibility that the treatment goes wrong and you are left with pain and possibly permanent scarring.
With skin care creams you don’t have that problem. If you choose a natural product line with no synthetic chemicals, man-made preservatives or petroleum-based ingredients, you are not likely to harm your skin in any way. Skin care creams are not as quick to give you visible results as laser treatment or dermabrasion, but there is also no healing time and chances are the effects will even last longer.
Our skin regenerates itself constantly. If you remove the outer layer of your skin with surgery, it will reveal a layer of new, flawless skin. But in fact, this new skin is now the new outer layer and will most likely attract all the same problems your “original” skin had. The solution would be to have more surgery and remove that skin again.
With skin creams, you can treat all the layers of your skin at the same time. Therefore you are taking care of your outer skin, making it look its best, and at the same time nourishing your skin’s inner layers. In time, the dead skin cells of the outer skin fall off by themselves, naturally, revealing the well-cared for new skin cells.
I personally wouldn’t have laser treatment or dermabrasion unless I had strong scarring on my face. When it comes to getting rid of age spots, wrinkles or acne scars, I believe using a 100% natural skin care system with healing plant-based oils and substances is the best choice: it’s safe, affordable and will give you long lasting results if you do it consistently.
